Transferred from Hosting-Unlimited to HostGator

Well it’s been pretty quite on my Blog lately and that’s because I had been transferring all my files and databases from Hosting-Unlimited to HostGator because though I have been with Hosting-Unlimited for 420 days now and I’m still quite happy to host small test sites with them that are not so important, I had been having lots of downtime amongst other things lately with this Blog and it wasn’t feasible enough to keep it hosted here as I was losing quite a lot of visitors.

I guess you could say that the 4 main reasons for leaving were:

  • The site would be down nearly all the time I checked
  • Emails could not be sent or received at times.
  • The bandwidth usage was not updating sometimes in cpanel
  • And the Server HDD would be full and I couldn’t upload via FTP.

I sent support tickets many times for these issues and the issues were normally resolved in a short space of time, but I would find myself re-opening the support tickets more and more lately because the problems were getting worse.

And if you have to take into account whether it would have been fixed or not if you weren’t around to send a support ticket, for example Eric Cheung a Windows Live Butterfly took me to the Apple store in London on Thursday and when I checked my site on a Mac to see what it looked like was I disappointed to find that my Site and Blog was down once again, of course there and then wasn’t the time to be sending support tickets so I unfortunately left it as is knowing that my site being down then was the last straw for me having my Blog hosted at Hosting-Unlimited and that as soon as I could I would finish the last transfer batch of files and databases from Hosting-Unlimited to my new server at HostGator.

So that’s basically why I have swapped hosting companies, even while I am writing this very blog entry is the server at Hosting-Unlimited having problems with server load:

Server Load 3.76 (4 cpus) (RED ALERT)
Disk sda3 (/) 96 %  (RED ALERT)

Yet if I check HostGator where my site is now located everything is fine, so I’m very happy that I have now moved because though it’s costing me a lot more money than it was with Hosting-Unlimited at least I know that my site will not have a lot of downtime, or at least that’s what I expect, I guess only time will tell as it did with Hosting-Unlimited.

And though I said everything I did about Hosting-Unlimited I would still like to remind everybody that they are still quite a good UK hosting company which gives you a great deal of features for your money, and though the problems I was having might have been related to when the server I was on had major issues at one point I just don’t think it was up for hosting a blog like mine that is getting more and more visitors by the day.

[…] Anyway we were now left wondering once again what to do, but it didn’t take long for me to suggest Hamleys, hehe, you have to admit we are all Big Kids deep down. After checking out some toys and gadgets at Hamleys, Eric took me to the Apple store where we tried loading various online websites on a Mac using the Safari Browser, Windows Live Mail worked in basic version but Live.com didn’t work at all which was a shame but not as much shame as my own site not loading but not because it wasn’t compatible but because my hosting was down again, which was really annoying and resulted in last straw for me, making me transfer all my files and databases for my site and blog from Hosting-Unlimited to HostGator, I’ve posted a blog post about the fiasco here.
