#4323 Server Rules

Posted by darrenstraight on 19 September 2011 - 04:15 PM

General rules:

  • Be a part of the community. Participate with others. Offer your unique talents to assist other players and they will likely offer you help in return.
  • Be polite and choose your vocabulary wisely, no swearing either spelled out, using asterisks or acronym abbreviations. If you are unsure about whether or not you can say something then just choose another way to express yourself.
  • Respect other people’s property. Do not enter houses or check chests that are not yours unless it is clearly marked as being a public chest (quest, minecart, public farm and game chests etc). Everyone works hard to make impressive builds. Please do not destroy other user's creations.
  • Earn your belongings by working for them no stealing please, we will catch you.
  • Mine for your own materials. Do not steal or pick up other's dropped inventories when they die, unless you are asked to do so.
  • Anything that gives you an advantage over everyone else is considered cheating. No exploiting and/or hacking, including but not limited to mods/texture packs used for the following: Flying, Speed, Spawning, Cloning & X-Ray.
  • Use public transportation to get around or find hidden warp signs, no need to ask us to teleport you to places.
  • Do not ask for items to be spawned or for the time of day to be changed.
  • You are welcome to use potions, enchantments and ender pearls but please do not use them to break the rules or access restricted areas that you wouldn't normally be able to access. We dont want to take them away from you!
  • Do not wear inappropriate skins, we are a family friendly server.
  • Please do not use the YAMS Network in all its forms, to advertise or solicit any products, services, servers, funds or donations. This is not the place to advertise.
  • General spamming of server chat is not allowed. "Spam" includes, but is not limited to, repeating sentences and/or splitting short sentences into several lines unnecessarily.

Building rules:

  • Before being able to build you must complete a quest to show your enthusiasm in wanting to participate within our community. There is more information about this once you join.
  • In our current YAMS main world, we only build our houses along the sides of the 4 main rails (Blue, Green, Yellow and Red).
  • Along the rails there are side openings (stairs/paths), each side opening leads to a plot section where you can build your house. You should always take the first available plot section. If you don't like the look of that section, try a different rail, but always take the first available plot.
  • You should build a path from your house to the gravel path at the side of the tracks.
  • You should not build your house more than 30 blocks away from the rails.
  • You should also not build your house too close to the rails so others can build near you.
  • Your house should be no bigger or higher than 21x21x21 blocks, this includes your house, out buildings, farms, decorations, furniture, balconies and roof edges.
  • You may have a basement, but it must not exceed the perimeter of your house, or be more than 11 blocks down. If you encounter a cave it is expected that you will ignore it apart from lighting it up to prevent mobs spawning and carry on with your building.
  • If you encounter a Dungeon while building don't take the items or alter it, instead let a member of staff know, we will remove it for your convenience.
  • If you encounter a ravine under your house, please ignore it and build around it.
  • Be creative in your house designs, try and use a mixture of different materials that go well together rather than just using one block type.
  • You can always check out the demo houses for examples.
  • Try and shape your house, don't just make it tall and square.
  • No tree houses or trees on top of your house, they overgrow and overshadow everyone else.
  • No houses made of dirt, gravel, pumpkins, melons, TNT or sand.
  • No waterfalls or other such things on the exterior of your house, you can have showers/baths etc inside your house, just keep them tidy. We wouldn't want you smelling now…
  • No lava falls or other such things on the exterior of your house, you can of course have lava trash areas etc inside your house just keep them tidy. We wouldn't want you being untidy now would we…
  • You can build on the edges of waterways but don’t build your house fully over or under water, this is so we can still have boat races.
  • Farming structures are included in your allotted perimeter, and any animals must be kept to a minimum of two of each type. Breeding is permitted but must not be left overcrowded when you log out.
  • No floating sky buildings or unsupported structures
  • No mob traps as this is an unfair advantage and also lags.
  • Dont leave redstone clocks on as this causes lag for other players.
  • If your building is found to be unsuitable you will be asked to alter it, we will give you tips.
  • If you become inactive by not coming on in 2 months and taking part we may remove your structures to make space for new players.
  • If you build your house somewhere and then decide you would like to move you will need to contact Darren to discuss your plans before moving. Only 1 house per person.
  • If you decide you would like to construct a public building please post your idea in the community building project section of the forums.
  • Once you have picked a spot to build, make sure you type /sethome in chat to set your home location, so you can use /home to return there from anywhere else on the server.

Environment rules:

  • We like to keep all worlds nice and tidy, please respect the environment and landscape by keeping it looking naturally tidy. Dont go around just randomly altering landscaped areas unless its where your house is being built.
  • Always keep it tidy, you may bonemeal around your house.
  • The only place you can mine is the mining world, you can find a mining portal in spawn.
  • Please remove entire trees, not just the bottom few parts of the trunk. Once you have removed all pieces of wood, the leaves will fall on their own. You should find at least one sapling from the dying leaves which you can then replant to grow a tree for future users.
  • If you find any floating tree tops or random holes in the ground please fix them, it's a team effort.
  • Gravity is unique in minecraft but there’s no need to defy it. Please do not build skybases or unsupported balconies and bridges.
  • Dungeons can be found all over in the mining world and while we don’t mind your taking the mossy cobblestone, and items from the chests, we do ask that mob spawners be left intact for future use.
  • NPC Villages should not be modified in any world, you may take from the chests in the mining world but not in the normal world.
  • Pixel art, including statues and lettering is not allowed unless authorised my a Moderator/Admin.
  • The Railroad System is intricate and will take you everywhere you need to go. The tracks can only be altered by Darren for transportation purposes and are subject to change. Occasionally they do get griefed and we may ask for your assistance in replacing missing tracks. This is the only exception to the rule.

Mining world rules:

  • The only place in YAMS where you can mine is in the mining world.
  • You can find a mining portal in spawn town.
  • While there you can use /mvs to return to the mining hub and /home or /spawn etc to get out of the mining world.
  • Please act responsibly when in this world as per YAMS rules.
  • You should not build in the mining world, this includes but not limited to: Homes, mining bases, stairs, ladders, farms, mob traps, untidy markers and modifying NPC villages/witch huts/temples.
  • Try and keep the surface of the world nice and tidy.
  • No leaving random blocks around unless it's to cross over something or get up high. Remember keep it tidy.
  • No leaving floating trees around, it's ugly and lazy.
  • When making a mine shaft don't just dig straight down.
  • You may use TNT, however please use it sensibly.
  • Furnaces, crafting tables and chests may be used however leaving items in them is at your own risk no one else's. This includes world resets.
  • The mining world is the only place where you can take from NPC Village chests providing you don't modify the village.
  • If you find a stronghold please don't mine everything! It makes the place look ugly and is unfair on people who have never seen a stronghold. Take only what you really need and if you really want to be helpful tell others how to get there, after all when theres a map refresh there will be another chance to get more brick.

Nether world rules:

Hello fellow adventurer. Many people come here but not all have returned home. For this reason please do not set your home in nether and please abide by the rules below, they are for your own safety, pay attention! :)

  • YAMS server rules apply so please be good.
  • Strictly no building, death awaits those that do.
  • Mine away from the portal but not to far away.
  • Dont be greedy rush mining the ghasts will get you.
  • No really don't be greedy, only take what you really need.
  • Don't tell other players how to find the nether they must find it on their own just like how you did.

Creative world rules:

  • The creative world is not the main part of YAMS, it's an addition to YAMS so you can test your ideas out and show your creativity with others easier.
  • From time to time this world may reset.
  • There is also a plot expiry time of 2 months, so if you become inactive for 2 months your plot will be removed.
  • Each player is allowed one plot, you can however invite others to help on your plot by giving them permissions with a command.
  • This world should be treated with respect don't abuse our trust, remember YAMS server rules apply as we are a family friendly minecraft server.
  • Buildings should be family friendly.
  • You can not /sethome in this world as its not the main world of YAMS, we still want players taking part in the main world.
  • The only way home from this world is to die in lava or such. You will lose all expeirence levels and items you have on you so make sure you leave them at home.
  • You can find more information and commands in the creative world, for which the portal is located at the bottom of spawn tower.

Multi-person account rules

  • Any violations will be held accountable to the Minecraft account (username). This includes:
    • Multi-person accounts.
    • Accounts temporarily used by others (including but not limited to friends and family).
    • Any account that has multiple people actively using needs to inform an Admin, Moderator or CSO. If you fail to abide by this rule we will take it as your account is only used by you and no one else.
  • Each member of a multi-person account must have a separate user account on the forums if possible.
  • In cases of a multi-person account being responsible for a violation of the rules we may try to make contact with all members using the multi-person account to find out what happened in cases where the rule violation has occurred while the account is offline. We may waive this in cases of more serious rule violations.
  • Lastly you may only use one account on YAMS to play, if you get a new account and want to start using that one instead, please inform us straight away.

Name changes

  • If you change your in game account name, please let us know on the forum as soon as possible. We will then change your forum name to match your new name.

Approved mods

  • It has recently come to my attention that text signs within minecraft are now causing an even bigger fps drop than before, with this in mind I have officially approved Optifine as one mod which can be used in YAMS as Optifine improves performance issues considerably, especially within spawn. Please respect this allowance, do not abuse my trust, do not use it to gain unfair advantage over others.

Please note that the rules above may not cover every eventuality and the YAMS staff reserve the right to take action against players as and when we see fit, and to modify the server rules without notice.

Have fun, be a part of the community, play nice!

#14119 1000 YAMS Forum likes, thank you!

Posted by darrenstraight on 20 July 2012 - 07:18 PM

A massive thank you to everyone who has liked my posts over the past year or so, I have now achieved my 1000 like goal. I guess I better set myself a new forum goal now? In the meantime, please find a little present in your town house. Sorry sandboxers I haven’t got round to you..

#1 PLEASE READ: Welcome to Yet Another Minecraft Server (YAMS)

Posted by darrenstraight on 12 February 2011 - 08:57 PM

Welcome to YAMS, short for Yet Another Minecraft Server. We are a public family friendly community focused minecraft server. We have strict rules in place for playing on this server; these rules help us to guarantee that the server is always a fun and relaxed place to hang out and play Minecraft especially as we cater for players of all ages.

We are open to the public on a daily basis 24/7, but occasionally we do whitelist in order to make renovations or to clear out our sandbox starter area. Our whitelist requirements are light enough to give everyone the ability to join, while also ensuring that the only people who join are active and friendly members of the YAMS community.

All guests to the forum will need to register for a forum account and introduce themselves in the introduction section before being able to join in other discussion topics. Please make sure you create a separate topic for yourself instead of adding to someone else’s and make sure you tell us a little about yourself such as what you like to do in and out of minecraft.

If whitelist is on you will also need to post your in-game name (with correct capitalization/punctuation) in your introduction topic so that we can enable you to join our community. Please put your name as the topic title instead of 'whitelist', as we know why you are here, we just need to know who you are and what you enjoy doing in and out of Minecraft to give us a better feel for who you are.

Once you are in game, you will start at the top of Spawn Tower where you can get a great overview of spawn town and surrounding areas. As you make your way down the stairs of the tower you will come to our rules room where you will learn what kind of behaviour we expect from our players. Each subsequent floor has more information such as beginner and advanced tips. Some of the server's history is available for those who like background information as well. The ground floor of the tower points out cardinal directions as well as directions to some of the attractions.

If you go north from Spawn Town you will find our "Sandbox starter area (SB)" where all new players are required to start so that we can get an idea of each person's style of building. There are a couple of demonstration houses available to give you ideas, and a community resource farm just beyond them to help you get started. The public mine entrance is in front of the farms on the left hand side, or feel free to use the one located in Spawn Town just outside the tower. The rules board will explain in great detail what you can and cant do in sandbox.

There is a separate approval signboard on the right hand side of the sandbox rules board. When you think your house is ready please post your name, date, and lot number as well as choosen town on this board, please ensure you have read all instructions before hand.

Once Darren has checked out your house he will either leave suggestions for improvement or he will post a notice on the "approval" wall letting you know you are approved to move to your choosen town for your permanent residence. A demonstration of your skills enables us to be sure you reside in a compatible town once you become a regular citizen. We appreciate the diversity that comes with people from all over the world but we like for our neighbours to get along too!

We welcome you once again to YAMS, and we hope you enjoy your time on our server!

You can find rules and guides in the Server Rules and Information section, here's a list of each topic within:

Good luck and watch out for those Mobs!

#15650 13/09/2012 - YAMS Adventure back in time

Posted by darrenstraight on 13 September 2012 - 08:48 PM

Wow where has time gone? Nearly a year ago, on the 18th of September 2011 Mojang gave us Minecraft Beta 1.8 The Adventure Update, a major update to Minecraft focused on fighting, exploration, and adventuring.

http://youtu.be/tYoO9XkCCHg

But how many of you remember what it was like to be a fighter, explorer or adventurer in YAMS first world? Yes there was a world before the one we are in now! We have been in the current one for nearly 8 months now.

The poor world was struggling to keep up with the times but still survives in the archives collecting dust. It’s time to uncover it for an adventure back in time to the last days of YAMS 1st world.

This Saturday the 15th of September 2012 at 12:00pm BST (click here for your time) the adventure begins for at least 24 hours.

You can join in at any time! There will be things to do throughout the 24 hours.

How to get there will be explained on the day, latest news of what you can do will be posted here.

#10812 01/04/2012 - April 2012 recruitment of CSO's

Posted by darrenstraight on 01 April 2012 - 03:55 PM

This month it will have been a year since we first created the Community Support Officer group on YAMS and I’m pleased to say it’s worked pretty well so far. So I want to continue to build on that and recruit more CSO’s.

We have been relying heavily on whitelist for the past few months because of all the updates and because it helps us have a more structured community by having them sign up to the forums. However by doing this we are limiting the amount of players we get through our doors... every day I see players try and join the server and get refused, we are in top 1-5 of various Minecraft Searches.

So why not just take whitelist off and try and get them to sign up to the forums? Well it’s the amount of people with authority we have on the server; we still have various time zones in which no member of staff is on! We have of course various protections in place but I like for new players to be shown around and explained everything when they join. Of course this can be done by regular members if no member of staff is on but this doesn’t always happen or happens badly as they are missing the required training or don’t fully understand the rules themselves.

Yesterday whitelist was of for most of the day. Iit got pretty busy with at least 16 new players joining, however not all of them were good and when I woke up I found out we had been griefed, luckily it had already been taken care of but still if we had more staff during them time zones it wouldn’t have happened. You try and be nice by allowing people to come on your server and they treat your server like that – it’s nice for anyone. Safe to say they are now globally banned.
So this has promoted me to recruit more staff so we can have whitelist off more often!

Here's a little information about what a Community Support Officer job entails:

1. Greet new players.
If you love to meet new people, you are proud to show them around this great server, help them find resources, give building ideas, or just chat them up for company then you already have the most important skills. :)

2. Reinforce Server Rules.
Are you familiar with the server rules posted in Spawn Tower? Do you encourage players to read or re-read them when they don't seem to know/remember how to behave? Would you feel comfortable muting players who can't seem to control what their fingers type in public chat? Can you handle the pressure of putting someone in jail when they get caught breaking the rules? Are you willing to investigate the reason behind the behavior and give them a second chance? Do you set a good example for others by just being you? ^_^

3. Report bannable offences to Mods/Admins.
Occasionally there are times on the server when all the Mods/Admins are offline for a moment. As a CSO, it is important to document griefing by taking screenshots of the damage or the playerlist of people online at the time. Do you mind taking a little personal time to contain/clean up griefed areas? Do you feel comfortable posting in the forums, something along the lines of “I saw so-and-so do such-and-such today and here are some screenshots of the damage along with locations."

4. Enjoy knowing that you are part of the reason YAMS is the best place to spend your Minecraft time!
Think about what you like most about YAMS and how to keep it being a place you visit to get a good dose of community spirit. We have such diversity here with people from many ages, interests, and countries. We might each have differences but the best thing about all of us is that we have so much in common. We just have to get to know each other to find out what those common interests are and to introduce new ideas to share. That's what community is about, so if you would like to support the YAMS community, apply to be a trainee CSO.

5. Acceptable to job role change.
Understand that from time to time you job role may change and you may be asked to help out on other things that are totally unrelated to what you normally do but that give a benefit towards the community. You may also get the opportunity to be in charge of a public building or specific Job.

To apply, you must be registered on the forums in order to reply to this post. Please give a brief summary of why you think you would be right for the job. Take a moment to look back over previous applications (here and here and older one here) if you need ideas of what to say but be original and bare in mind that a lots changed since them applications. We want to know which assets you will bring to the staff team. Why you and not that other person? B)

Good Luck!

Closing Date: 1 week from date/time of post.
Amount of positions available: undisclosed.

#17994 05/01/2013 - January 2013 recruitment of CSO's

Posted by darrenstraight on 05 January 2013 - 03:02 PM

Next week YAMS will be 2 years old, our community has been steadily growing with new members since day 1. However we dont always grow, sometimes we loose players, this happens for a multitude of reasons, that being their personal lives are busy, not agreeing with the way I run this community or because they got themselves banned.

I beileve it's time that we started promoting YAMS more again and work on having more active players instead of players that come on and then go away for months at a time, we do great things at YAMS it’s just such a shame that so much of this is not seen by people out there.

Recently we have yet again been relying heavily on whitelist, normally because of a lack of staff on (thats not saying I want my current staff to have to be on 24/7, it's not fair on them) or becuase we have had trouble.

With this said I do routinely take whitelist off, but every time I do it seems like the staff suddenly disappear at no fault of their own (lunch, dinner time, going out etc). It seems whenever I take it off, I end up being the only member of staff on the server and have had to do multiple tours all at once, now I dont mind doing the tours one bit but as admin I have loads of other stuff to do to, do I give a tour to a new person of fix a bug that’s been annoying current players? Trying to balance it all out can be quite stressful at times, so I end up putting whitelist back on until more staff come back on.

Now most of YAMS is setup so if there is no staff on new players can still work things out (if they read all the signs) however I like the personal touch, it's not something you see at a lot of servers, someone greeting you and actualy helping you around, though some people say things like "what dont you trust me why are you spying on/following me" its not that at all, its more to help them out so they know exactly what to do and wont get in trouble later.

Though a lot of players do eventual get themselves in trouble, this is mainly due to there not being enough follow up from CSO's. Once they have left someone in Sandbox they should regularly keep checking up on this player over the next couple of days or more ensuring they are doing well and understand the approval process, even help them on their houses if need be.

So this should be happening but it doesn’t always happen as theres so many other things that need doing on YAMS too, not to mention the fact that people also like to play (I dont blame them) instead of feeling obligated they have to do yams work all the time.

Anyway id like to get these things sorted and take whitelist off more, every day I see people join and get refused becuase of whitelist, we are in top 1-5 of various Minecraft Searches. Searches such as: Family friendly minecraft server, Family friendly minecraft servers, banned from minecraft and many more....

So why not just take whitelist off and try and get them to sign up to the forums? Well as i said above it’s the amount of people with authority we have on the server; we still have various time zones in which no member of staff is on! We have of course various protections in place but as I said earlier I like for new players to be shown around and explained everything when they join. Of course this can be done by regular members if no member of staff is on but this doesn’t always happen or happens badly as they are missing the required training or don’t fully understand the rules themselves.

It's just a shame that when I do take whitelist off we end up putting it back on a lot because of griefers and such. You try and be nice by allowing people to come on your server and they treat you, your staff and the server badly – it’s not nice for anyone. Safe to say these kind of people are always dealt with. It's just a shame you give them a 15 minute tour only to see them banned an hour down the line.

Ok so enough rambling, it's time to recruit more staff so we can have whitelist off more often!

Here's a little information about what a Community Support Officer job entails:

Also it doesnt matter if you post now, or wait untill someone else posts, your post should be your words not someone elses and anyway your post is not the only part we base your application on, we will also base it on things such as your previous forum activity, severity of past crimes and how much time of course you have spent in game and when you are, are you helping the community.

We want to know which assets you will bring to the staff team. Why you and not that other person? B)

#17045 Grandparents

Posted by MadRAD on 16 November 2012 - 07:14 AM

I hope you can all indulge me for a brief post that is away from the fun of gaming and is a little sad.

Our lives are shaped by a multitude of people that we encounter throughout our lives. Some friends, some family, and it always hurts when we lose them. Last year I suffered my first big loss in the shape of my Granddad, it was a surprise that no one truly saw coming. But a year on and I still remember him and the stories of his life that will now live on through me, my sister, my cousins, and the next few generations who we will recount those stories to.

Stories such as how his nickname when growing up was jamjar, as he used to collect old jam jars to sell for spare cash, or how when he was a boy during world war II he collected his ration stamps to buy a suit, on his way home wearing that new suit a bomb went off and he got sent flying through a greenhouse (tearing the suit to bits) when the ambulance came the paramedics declared that there was nothing they could do, luckily (for my granddad as well as my existence) an American GI was walking past, saw the incident and said no we can save him. My Granddad lived till the age of 82.

This morning about 15 minutes prior to writing this sentence I learned that my other granddad who throughout my live has been known to me as my Ollie died peacefully in his sleep, age 76, after suffering from cancer, lung problems, as well as various other problems. He lived a long and varied life, and his memory will also be fondly remembered for generations to come. For example how, he originally trained to become a blacksmith when the time come that he had to sign up for national service. He and his friend decide to sign up for the Merchant Navy and they got a little drunk beforehand, when they went to sign up his friend took the right turn, my Ollie took a wrong turn and signed up for the Royal Navy. Although he had this mistake he spent many years serving his country even though he would just say was his job.

My Ollie was one of the strongest people I have ever known.

I am sorry for the depressing tone of this post, but to be honest the typing has helped me to release some feelings that I needed to get out. We all have people in our lives that we will miss when they have gone, but remember, just remember those memories that make them special and they will never die in our minds and in our hearts.

Now I'm going to go, but I am going to leave you will a thought and a challenge. Tell the people who you care about that you love them and give them a hug, tell your friends hey your awesome and then shake their hands (see Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World), and most of all remember the good times but never the bad.

#16174 06/10/2012 - New Test Build World Open!

Posted by darrenstraight on 06 October 2012 - 10:42 AM

Hello everyone,

Nearly a year ago (9th of October 2011) we opened up the test area in the old world (see post here), I had high hopes for this place but even after I removed the 1x diamond fee shortly after it opened, it never really kicked off. I have various thoughts on why it didn’t work, however that’s not what I'm here to talk about today.

I'm here today to announce that we are yet again giving another go at this, this time however it will be a separate world called the “test build world” which has mystical powers!

This place has been setup to allow people to show their ideas and designs to others of things that could be included in the normal world or that could be included in existing projects, so for example: You could use it to help you build designs for the University, North West corner town or Halloween area.

Ok so I guess I should tell you how to get here? Well I would love to but I forgot where the entrance to it was… I remember going to tell someone where the entrance was then all I remember is this bright light, I’m wondering if my memory got wiped because I told someone, not absolutely sure though so if you do find it best not tell or hint to anyone how to get there…

Ohh I do have this photograph though, maybe the entrance is somewhere in it? I’ll let you go and investigate.

EDIT: Photo may take a while to load below... :)

#14488 09/08/2012 - August 2012 recruitment of CSO's

Posted by darrenstraight on 09 August 2012 - 01:25 PM

Next week it will have been 6 months since we started the new map we are on now (look out for an upcoming post this week sometime) and while we have been steadily growing we have lost quite a few players along the way either due to their personal lives, not agreeing with the way I run this community or because they got themselves banned.

It's time we started promoting YAMS more and work on having more active players instead of players that come and go months at a time, we do great things at YAMS it’s just such a shame that so much of this is not seen by people out there.

We have yet again been relying heavily on whitelist for the past few months, normally because of a lack of staff on (thats not saying I want my current staff to have to be on 24/7, it's not fair on them).

With this said I do routinely take whitelist off, but every time I do it seems like the staff suddenly disappear at no fault of their own (lunch, dinner time, going out etc). I on many occasions recently have been the only member of staff on the server and have had to do multiple tours, now I dont mind doing the tours one bit but as admin I have loads of other stuff to do to, do I give a tour to a new person of fix a bug that’s been annoying current players? Trying to balance it all out can be quite stressful at times, so I end up putting whitelist back on until more staff comes back.

Now most of YAMS is setup so if there is no staff on new players can still work things out (if they read all the signs) however I like the personal touch, it's not something you see at a lot of servers someone greeting you and actual helping you around, though some people say things like "what dont you trust me why are you spying on/following me" its not that at all, its more to help them out so they know exactly what to do and wont get in trouble latter.

Though a lot of players do.. And that’s mainly due to there not being enough follow up from CSO's. Once they have left someone in Sandbox they should regularly keep checking up on this player over the next couple of days or more ensuring they are doing well and understand the approval process, even help them on their houses if need be.

So this should be happening but it doesn’t always, the other day for example I found out that there was a player in sandbox that had been there nearly 2 months and a half. This is something that should have been picked up on my by CSO's ages ago but yet no signs what so ever had been left in his house even though the player had been on a few days ago... did this player never get a tour? Had he not read the rules? Had he not been explained by anyone the approval process?

I need to spend some more time with my CSO's individually and actually work out why things like this are happening/not happening, but unfortunately right now I’m stuck doing lots of other jobs that could easily be done others, as an example, the other day on the day of the update I planted cocoa bean plants for everyone in sandbox, the next day I come on and they have all been taken and not replanted, so I wasted time organising replanting and talking to the person who didn’t replant (there were signs saying to do so). Another example is everyday people keep on putting their signs up asking for approval (but hasn’t followed the instructions) I waste inspecting someone’s house only to find out they haven’t completed all the required steps.

I expect the same somewhat happens for the other staff were they are caught up in things that could have easily been solved if we had more time, staff etc.

Anyway id like to get these things sorted and take whitelist off more, every day I see people join and get refused becuase of whitelist, we are in top 1-5 of various Minecraft Searches. Searches such as: Family friendly minecraft server,
Family friendly minecraft servers, banned from minecraft, cool and awesome minecraft names and many more....

Whitelist is currently off now, so I'm going to see how things go. It's just a shame we end up putting it back on a lot because of griefers and such. You try and be nice by allowing people to come on your server and they treat you, your staff and the server badly – it’s not nice for anyone. Safe to say these kind of people are always dealt with but again, it's wasted time especially if you give them a 15 minute tour only to see them banned an hour down the line.

Ok so enough rambling, all of this yet againhas prompted me to recruit more staff so we can have whitelist off more often!

Here's a little information about what a Community Support Officer job entails:

1. Greet new players.
If you love to meet new people, you are proud to show them around this great server, help them find resources, give them building ideas, or just chat with them for company then you already have the most important skills. :)

Do you feel comfortable posting in the forums, something along the lines of “I saw so and-so do such and such today and here are some screenshots of the damage along with locations."

4. Enjoy knowing that you are part of the reason YAMS is the best place to spend your Minecraft time!
Think about what you like most about YAMS and how to keep it being a place you visit to get a good dose of community spirit. We have such diversity here with people from many ages, interests, and countries. We might each have our differences but the best thing about all of us is that we have so much in common.

To apply, you must be registered on the forums in order to reply to this post (we like to keep things open). Please give a brief summary of why you think you would be right for the job. Take a moment to look back over previous applications (here, here, here and an older one here) if you need ideas of what to say but be original and bare in mind that a lots changed since them applications (dont just copy and paste we will know). Also it doesnt matter if you post now, or wait untill someone else posts, your post should be your words not someone elses and anyway your post is not the only part we base your application on, we will also base it on things such as your previous forum activity, severity of past crimes and how much time of course you spent in game and when you are are you helping others.

We want to know which assets you will bring to the staff team. Why you and not that other person? B)

Good Luck!

Closing Date: 1 week from date/time of post.
Amount of positions available: undisclosed.

#7845 Dont keep yourself to yourself!

Posted by darrenstraight on 20 December 2011 - 06:54 PM

Hello everyone,

I feel the need to mention this as I’m not too happy about it a few things recently concerning people sticking to their same little groups and not inviting others to participate:
  • Going mining in groups and never inviting others, especially new players: Everyone on YAMS should feel welcome and have the chance to go mining with others.
  • Creating “secret” groups amongst people: we are an open community; we don’t need little guilds here and there.
  • Hermits and cave dwellers: Don’t keep yourself to yourself in your own little house, come out of your hiding place and talk to others, we won't bite and whats the worst that can happen really? We are a family friendly server, lets keep up to that name!
  • Keeping your resources to yourself: I’m talking about the people who keep their items to themselves and won’t give them up unless it benefits them! Sure you have worked hard to get the materials but spreading a few amongst new players won’t hurt you and I’m sure the new players will remember it well. Some of the best stories I’ve heard from people on YAMS are about those that were offered materials when they had nothing to build with! And I’m not talking about community chests and leaving your junk in there; I’m talking about actually handing something to someone they can actually use.
  • People not willing to give tours because it’s not their job: It doesn’t have to be a member of staff who gives a tour, if they are not on or seem very busy, why not offer to do it for them? Some of the most successful tours I’ve seen done are by non-staff members.
  • Working on projects but not letting others help out: It’s no fun not being able to help out on anything, especially when you really feel you could help but get shoved away all the time when you ask.
  • Building projects but not telling others: There’s been a few instances recently in which a few projects have been created but unless you were there at the time it was built or were told directly about it, you’d never know about it. Sure there’s the saying that you should explore YAMS and find these things but some of these projects have been in the most obscure locations and as a new player I may not enter for fear of being banned.
  • Lots more….
Basically were a community. Our number 1 rule if you didn’t know is be a part of the community. So peeps let’s see more working together amongst you all, instead of little pockets of people here and there in selective groups talking or working together!

We are all to blame including me, so I am locking this topic and hope you all take this post as a reflection on how we can all improve!

Thanks,
Darren

P.S. Have a Good Christmas/Holiday and a Happy New Year!

Posted by darrenstraight on 26 August 2013 - 08:28 PM

So me and madrad went for a 11.2 mile walk today, down many pathways:

Across our travels we encountered a gate opening of some sorts.

Interesting we thought, what could be inside.

In we walked, encountering barren waste land.

It looked like something was built here at one time, but what we wondered?

So much laid in ruins, this place looked like it had been destroyed by TNT.

#18663 23/01/2013 - Chairs come to YAMS!

Posted by darrenstraight on 23 January 2013 - 06:39 PM

A year and a half ago there was this idea of using a plugin that allowed you to sit on chairs (well stairs). I really liked this idea however there were quite a few bugs with it, one being that while you were sat down no one else could see you!

Today I would like to resurrect that idea by installing a chairs plugin that actually works! :D

The only bug I’ve noticed is that it takes a little while for the plugin to work out you’re coming of the chair if you gently move off it you will still be sitting down even though you are 1 block off, but that’s no real big issue unless people start to be silly and force be to remove it.

Anyway to create a chair:
  • Create a 1 - 3 wide set of stairs (any type) with or without signs/item frames for arm rests.
To take a seat on your new or even existing chair:
  • Stand 1 - 2 blocks away (takes some getting used too) and hold down your sneak/crouch key (probably left shift) and right click on the stairs. You will then be told you are sititng down. I decided to make it that you have to crouch so it’s less likely you end up sitting on chairs when you wanted to place a block instead.
To stand up from a chair:
  • Right click on the chair.
  • Destroy the chair.
  • Move away from the chair.
You cannot sit in an already occupied chair!

I shall review this plugin and how you interact with it for the next few days/weeks to come, if it causes too much of an issue for people, maybe trying to place blocks and you keep sitting etc... we may end up removing it. But for now its here to stay!

Please let others know about this, spread the word and also don't forget to leave feedback below.

Enjoy! :D

#18157 09/01/2013 - YAMS 2nd Year Anniversary

Posted by darrenstraight on 09 January 2013 - 12:17 PM

Today the 9th of January 2013, YAMS is officially 2 years old - wow!

I have interesting things to tell you... but first I'd like to tell you somewhat the same story from last year about about how I started playing Minecraft and how YAMS was born, as we have new players who may not have seen that post.

A brief story of YAMS

In October 2010 I was watching my brother play Minecraft Classic and Alpha round my house and it looked quite interesting, something we could both play together. I’d always wanted to play a sandbox game where I could build anything. So on the 9th of October 2010 I purchased the account “darrenstraight” and started playing Minecraft properly with my brother on a home server, we built quite a few maps together while he was over at mine, it was very fun, I remember building my first minecraft track that went on for ages cutting through the land and water.

Between November and December 2010 I started looking for various servers I could join, servers came and servers disappeared, it was hard times in the minecraft server world. I eventually came across one I quite enjoyed however it annoyed me that they kept changing the spawn point every time the current spawn town got griefed, so instead of trying to fix the town they just moved on to another part of the map and built a new town, this meant I was doing a lot of walking between my old house and new house if I died. However I managed to shorten the time it took by building a connecting tunnel between my houses, however people of course bumped into them from time to time and ended up at my house but only if they took the correct secret path! Eventually I gave up on this server because of these issues and though my memories of it are slowly fading away I still remember the good times.

One server I found in December 2010 was called Something Super Awesome, it was fairly well setup so I was hoping this might be the one; I read the rules and found a place to build. I went about meeting new people and such however it was not meant to be, as I was banned without explanation or reason. I tried contacting them but no luck so knowing my blog can get good traffic I decided to make a blog post on them to attract their attention – it worked! Better than expected actually, if you loaded up Google and searched using phrases such as “banned from minecraft server” my blog post was top. So I certainly grabbed their attention. However I was not unbanned and to be honest I didn’t really care if I was they had already shown what type of server they were and I didn’t want to be a part of it.

In January 2011 I decided it was time to put a plan into action, I was tired of finding servers that kept resetting the map every week, appeared and disappeared or were just disrespectful. I knew there was an increase of Minecraft servers out there now, but I thought to myself if they can do it so can I, maybe even better especially with my IT and leadership/management expertise.

On Monday the 9th of January 2011, 3 months after first having purchased my minecrfat premium account, I purchased a basic Minecraft 8 Player Slot server running hMod, it was what we had before bukkit. Take that Something Super Awesome I thought!

I gave myself a deadline of the 14th of January 2011, by which point I had hoped to have everything setup and ready with the help of my brother "Brainsss". However sods law that around this time I was having internet connection problems and then Minecraft Beta 1.2 was released! It seemed as this project was doomed to fail! I didn’t however let any of this hinder my spirit so I invited those that wanted to join to request so in my blog post comments so I could send them the ip address and at least get some sort of player base started.

On the 21st of January 2011 the server ip was still not publically known and unfortunately "Brainsss" was also having internet access issues preventing him from helping out, so I decided to get some pictures out there on a blog post hoping to get some attention from people to come and help before it went public. It worked, I received two comments one being "TheTubbe" who was our first ever member!

On the 26th of January 2011, Yet Another Minecraft Server better known as YAMS went public, it didn’t have much at first, just a very basic cobblestone town but that was the idea of it, right from the start the number 1 rule was always be a part of the community so I hoped people would get involved in expanding the town.

On the 9th of February 2011 YAMS had a total of 50 users and from a basic cobblestone town we had grown into a nice little community, on the 12th of February 2011 I decided to put what I had learnt from past communities I had managed into action by setting up the forums, it proved a success amongst members as it gave them somewhere to discuss how we should progress with YAMS.

Things from then onwards started to get busy on YAMS, our little 8 player server with 500MB of RAM was maxed out every day/night. So on the 25th March 2011 I decided it was time to upgrade and we upgraded to a 12 player slot server with 1024MB RAM, this helped a lot and allowed the community to grow and by June 2011 we had 1100 Players ever join YAMS, of course there was a fair share of bans just as there is unfortunately still today.

On the 6th of June 2011 we appointed our first CSO and also had another server upgrade, this time to what we have now which is a 24 player slot server with 2048MB Ram, not everyone was happy about this and some felt it was taking away the little community we had, however I don’t regret the decision to upgrade we are still going strong as a community and them extra player slots along with the extra processor allocation and RAM has helped us be able to play around with plugins more for events, before we couldn’t do this without putting a strain on the server.

On the 27th of August 2011 I announced that big changes were coming to YAMS as towns were going to now be more restructured with town moderators and a continuation of using more plots instead of live anywhere you like. 6 months before this I hadn’t expected that we would have this many people, so these changes while not all welcomed were necessary in order to keep YAMS tidy instead of turning into another dead end server filled with random mess everywhere, which was staring to happen in some areas as we didn’t know if players were coming back or not. I also knew this was a chance to see if this would work for future plans I had.

On the 9th of October 2011 a test build area was opened, I still wanted to allow player to be creative as I knew we had restricted them in towns somewhat now. It was wasn’t hugely successful however due to its location being quite far out and the fact that a lot of players didn’t want to use their own materials, along with the fee you had to pay, though this was shortly removed. The test build world we have today accomplishes what back then I couldn’t.

Shortly after this on the 18th of November 2011 YAMS had it's first mining world. Before this people could mine anywhere in the normal world, however it wasnt long before people kept hitting peoples basements and messing up all the YAMS terrain and there were also the issue of not having new ores, this problem was solved by creating a section that I could regenerate time and time again and people could only mine there. This worked well for some but was time consuming for me and wasnt really that fun to mine it. This is why the mining world was born.

Now that we could have multiple worlds, we started having more fun events, castaways, halloween, christmas and lots of others!

On the 9th of December 2011 it was time to announce to the members of YAMS the next big change for YAMS, I had been informing members that a bigger change was coming for some time. The change was a new main world, it was time to say goodbye to our current world and start a fresh world with everything setup much better for new and current players. Of course there were a lot of people who were very sad because of this, but it's something that needed to happen as you can read yourself from the post I link to above, our current world was falling apart.

It wasnt all sad though, a lot of fun was had building The Ark and filling it with items for the new world. Every player was allowed to take 2 double chests full of items to the new world. Deciding what to take was interesting. You can find more info about The Ark at this post here.

Also we had a chance to say one big goodbye for the old world as in January 2012 we celebrated YAMS 1st Anniversary in style, as we time travelled through time seeing YAMS at different stages throughout the past year. It went on for a bit longer than expected but was certainly a very enjoyable experience and even had a little twist to it at the end in which the whole of water around spawn was lava and dirt was netherack! Not to mention other things… but I’ll let you read the post!

On the 18th of February 2012 we finally moved to the new world, the world you build your house in today. It was a fun and interesting experience especially as every single member had to go through sandbox including myself and all staff, a lot of us had never gone through sandbox before, the sandbox process was setup quite a while back in the old world but we still had loyal members who had been here before that.

On the 13th of September, nearly 7 months after having moved to the new world, it was time to give the community another chance at remembering where we had come from. The YAMS Adventure back in time event happened, we visted the old world as it was the day we moved.

On the 6th of October nearly a year after the initial attempt at creating a test build area, I gave it a second shot, this time as separate world with extra "features"… In my opinion this has proved a success, of course you have to find the portal to it, which is a problem for some people but if you read the posts, such as the main one about it and the YAMS Server info post, you'll soon find it, it's really not that hard. But hey here's another clue for you.... Did you know it takes just under a minute to walk to the entrance from the bottom of spawn tower but it's not as a nice of a walk as walking round the outskirts of spawn, it only takes 6 minutes and 15 seconds.

So now 2 years on since YAMS was first started, we have now had over 3000 players join us and while we have lost many good people along the way, both for being banned (we try not to invoice bans but sometimes they leave us no choice) and leaving on their own accord (time to move on), we have gained lots of new interesting, fun and exciting people too. I believe YAMS is what you the YAMS Community make it to be, you will get as much back from YAMS and the community as you put in, if not more!

YAMS the dictatorship

Something that sometimes gets brought up by the community is how we can be too restrictive on building permissions; well yes we are certainly are more restrictive than what we used to be, but for good cause. Before you could pretty much build anywhere but that was when we had a very small community.

I stopped the build where ever fashion very early on to some extent as people did just that, they started building all over the place in no orderly fashion and not as a community as I had hoped, I decided that Id approve peoples locations on an individually basis around landmarks/big builds, this worked well to some degree but was very time consuming.

So sandbox was invented along with town plots, this freed up more of my time letting me spend more time with my community and plan events and such. I just wish more people would post in the town topic forums with what they want to see in each town and even get involved in their town projects more, or even help out in other town projects for that matter; maybe you could all make that your YAMS New Year resolutions? ;)

Anyway I bring this up as recently I was told as I have been in the past that YAMS is a dictatorship, this is quite upsetting as I truly believe I do the best possible for YAMS to balance an orderly server while still providing some freedom, I don’t want us to just be like other servers out there where everything’s a mess.

There’s plenty of projects out there you can help out on, I make sure of this as I know you are somewhat restricted with your town houses, so if there’s anything you want to build in a town you only need to get it approved by a town mod (posting in the forum topic) and out of town projects by myself in the community build section.

Sure I don’t always approve everything but I do take everything into consideration and point you in the right direction if I thing there’s something else you could help out on, I also combine peoples various ideas into projects.

So to those that think YAMS sucks or is a dictatorship, maybe you should investigate what we have first and fully understand how we run things before making a judgement, whats interesting though is how many people get banned then regret doing what they did and try and plead their case to come back saying they haven't found another server out there like YAMS with a community.

The future

I could go on forever there’s so much more to say… but how about we celebrate instead and look towards the future of YAMS.

The celebrations

I would like to invite you all to celebrate 2 years of YAMS with me, this Saturday the 12th of January 2013 at 4:00pm GMT / 11:00am EST / 10:00am CST / 8:00am PST (time zone converter link here) for a very special community event.

If you plan on attending this event please tell us in the comments below so we can get some idea of how many people are turning up and who.

But hey you don't have to wait till the weekend to celebrate, why not celebrate now? Create your own celebrations with the community? It doesn't have to be something complicated, it could just be: Treasure hunts, boat/running races, capture the flag, pvp and spleef games, hide and seek and whatever else you can come up with! If you need any help, just ask! :)

More details about the main event will be revealed on the day but for now why not take a look at over 2623 screenshots of yams, taken by me over the past 2 years (see this link here) and discuss the past 2 years of YAMS in the comments below.

Thank you for being a part of the YAMS Community. :)

P.S. Each town will be receiving a present from me this afternoon, you will have to find it (wont be hard), but please don't ruin the surprise by opening/touching it, there will be instructions for your town moderator on what to do with it, they should follow the instructions with community members present and share whats inside with their towns community how they best decide, could be fair sharing or made into a game or anything really. :)
