02/09/2014 - YAMS and Minecraft 1.8

Recommended Posts

Minecraft 1.8 was released today, this may have stopped some of you who are using the default Minecraft profile (always updates) from getting on.

As with previous updates, we cant update the server to Minecraft 1.8 straight away for the simple fact that we have to wait until Bukkit, CraftBukkit, Spigot and plugins have updated themselves to the latest version of Minecraft, without these plugins we could not guarantee the smooth running of YAMS.

Minecraft 1.8 is not a backwards compatible update, meaning if you update to 1.8 you will not be able to connect to a 1.7.10 server (what we are currently on). With that said now that we are using Spigot (a more efficient version of craftbukkit) we are able to fix that with magic!

Magic? Ok not quite magic... more a hack! A protocol hack that tricks Minecraft 1.8 clients to thinking they are joining a Minecraft 1.8 server which is in fact really a Minecraft 1.7.10 server. This means you should be able to still join YAMS with 1.8, in creative worlds you may see the new blocks, you will not be able to use them though, you'll just get stone.

If you are using the default minecraft profile and don't want to use 1.8 (remember you can still connect to use just not use the new 1.8 blocks), you can can just create a new profile within the Minecraft launcher using version "release 1.7.10", of course you wont get the new blocks this way either but hey it's your choice.

As always I will keep you updated on the latest news of updating, if you have any concerns relating to YAMS and Minecraft 1.8 please feel free to ask in here and I'm sure someone will be able to answer you. Though some questions we wont know the answer too till it happens!

As explained in the past, please remember things may take a little while to be fully sorted once we do update.

Thank you,
Darren and the rest of the YAMS Staff.

P.S. On other news, I don't believe 1.8 fixes the issue of signs causing huge FPS drops (this is why we recommend optifine as it fixes the issue), want Mojang to fix this problem? Please up vote the issue!

Just a quick post to say I am not sure when we will be fully updated to Minecraft 1.8 with all new blocks, what with the DMCA take down against Mojang/Bukkit/Spiggot and now the fact that Microsoft has bought Minecraft. We shall just have to wait and see what happens. But at least you can still connect to YAMS regardless of whether you updated to 1.8 or are still on 1.7.10.

The following video segment helps you understand the problem:

I have updated to the latest patched version of Spigot, this still allows 1.7 and 1.8 clients to connect but it's not a full 1.8 server (doesn't have any of the 1.8 features). Still no news on when this whole DMCA issue will be resolved if ever it will be.... I know there are groups out there that are working on alternatives such as Sponge. I will keep checking for updates.

Update: After lots of hard work I have got us updated to Minecraft 1.8, so we can now use Minecraft 1.8 items.

I am sorry for the delay, I was relying on plugins and such to update. Its still not perfect, there are some bugs here and there such as spawn tower messages not being formatted correctly but its good enough for now.

Thanks for being patient. :)

EDIT: Formatting issue fixed.

EDIT 2: I will try and sort out a new mining world at some point when I have time.
