Tomorrow the 8th of September 2011 is the date from which we know Minecraft Beta 1.8 "Adventure Update" may be released, Jeb has stated it is hoped to be released in an evening from this date.
Please find a list of Frequently Asked Questions below concerning 1.8 and YAMS.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Should I update to 1.8?
A: You can, however doing so will most probably mean you won’t be able to connect to the server. I suggest before you upgrade you make up a backup copy of the bin folder.
Bin folder located at the following loactions ( “~” = username):
Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\~\Application Data\.minecraft
Windows Vista, Server 2008, 7, and Server 2008 R2: C:\Users\~\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft
Linux: /home/~/.minecraft
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
Info: http://windows7theme...-windows-7.html
Q: What happens if I upgrade to 1.8 and still want to play on YAMS?
A: Restore or overwrite your new bin folder with your old backed up folder. If you don’t have a backup try looking at the following topic which has links to downgrade programs, however these may not be updated straight away when 1.8 is out:
http://www.darrenstr...ly-and-legally/
Q: When will the server be updated to 1.8?
A: We will update the server to 1.8 as soon as we can, many other Minecraft servers out there will have the same problem. We have to wait until the Bukkit API is updated. Last time it didn’t take very long at all but this time it may be a little bit longer. We wil inform you here as soon as we upgrade to 1.8.
Q: Will you be resetting the map/world?
A: At this current moment in time no.
Q: Does “current moment” mean you will be in the future?
A: I along with my moderators have been discussing 1.8 and the final release in great detail, we have come up with what we believe is a good way forward for YAMS, however a final plan and timeline will need to be drawn up before this information is released to CSOs first and then Members. The changes you are seeing in YAMS now are all part of these “bigger” changes I’ve said about before and are somewhat part of a trial to see if our plans will work or not. Don’t worry we will release more information as soon as we can, and the bigger changes are not happening until the final release anyway!
Q: Will I get to take part in these changes?
A: Yes everyone will be involved to some extent!
Q: But what if I want to see all the new biomes and what not in 1.8?
A: As I have done before, we will have group explorations of adventure to the far lands…. We never make it, that would take us a long time but we do certainly see lots of good sights on the way!
Q: Is there anything I can do to help in preparation for 1.8?
A: Yes there certainly is, don’t go exploring very far away! Over the past week people have expanded the map a huge amount which is quite annoying as I only recently cut out generated chunks ready for 1.8. Every time people go exploring further out not only does it create more server load but it also means that when there’s new terrain and such we have to go even further out for the new stuff… what I normally do is as I did the other week cut the area loaded but with nothing in them, to do this I have to download the map and delicately cut out the areas with no buildings in them, sometimes I end up doing the same thing multiple times because I cut somebodies house out underground so I have to start from scratch again! Once I’ve done this I then save the map and upload it. While this is happening anything you do in the world doesn’t get saved so… Exploring further away = YAMS Downtime.
Q: I have a question that’s not answered here.
A: Leave me a message below and I or a member of staff will answer you.

I read that Jeb is working with the bukkit team over the code disclosure contract given to all big modders. This may be sooner than expected.

Yes the Bukkit team found some bugs in 1.8 that Jeb was informed about by them, that was yesterday!

Hi all! (no I'm not dead) Sorry I haven't been on in a while =( I'm stuck at the house with the old power Mac g5 and most of all, school started *Cries* anyway I have been very busy. Unfortunately the Mac version dosent seem to get the new launcher so I don't get a choice if when to upgrade so I'll see you when the bucket support comes out.
Ps. Don't we have that plugin for blocking world expansion?
Can't wait for the expedition though! Haven't ever been on one.

Haha last night I didnt come on much as I wanted a little break before the update, so I watched 5 episodes of Torchwood in a row!
Good timing or what!
Though I was going to watch the other 5 today!
Last time there was update I didn't sleep much, making sure everything was up and ready... so don't be shocked if Bukkit updates but I dont straight away, I want to do this right and me getting no sleep isn't going to help me or anyone else.
Here's my checklist (crossed out means done) - this has changed somewhat and a lot of it depends on when bukkit is out.

Here's my checklist (crossed out means done) - this has changed somewhat and a lot of it depends on when bukkit is out.
Double and triple backupSave all buldings to be cut out as schematics (musseum, shadow mosses, bens etc)Regenrate all fine areas in game such as mines etc....(partially done)Backup again.Test out trim feautre of world border.- Take YAMS offline, let the terrain generator program expand all areas to fill the map into a square of 1.73 chunks.
- Upload map, ensure border is set at correct position, fill in remaining 1.7.3 chunks just behind border with the /fill command.
- Backup map.
- Ensure any other areas that need regenrating are done if they were missed.
- Finaly tweaks ready for 1.8
- Bring YAMS back online, wait for Bukkit to update.
- Move over to 1.8, keep border same.
- Download map and use the terrain generator to expand the map outwards evenly, this time with 1.8 terrain.
- Upload map and expand border further back a little.
- Gradually expand futher back as needed letting 1.8 terrain grow over the border over next couple of days and ensure border is increased.
- When 1.9 comes same process as above. Think of it like an onion!!! Layers!!!

I'm going to kill my room mate, He updated Minecraft to 1.8 before backing up the file so it looks like ill be out for a while.
My minecraft keeps crashing anyway when trying to play 1.8 so I might have to quit Minecraft for good if it wont play, which will be rubbish.

Fear not! I had this same problem. Just redownload minecraft and it works fine. Also, it appears that the Mac version finally has the new launcher.
