Handshakes by The Carpels (One Beat Records)
Remember my post back in april about The Carpels and their song Sand?
Well fresh from a storming appearance at London’s coolest club night This Feeling, Birmingham band The Carpels are about to launch their new single Handshakes. Snapped at the Queen of Hoxton by Libertines photographer Roger Sargent, the buzz around this band is growing – you may have seen ads for them on YouTube?
And ”attention grabbing” is the effect they have. Their sound is a ‘sock it to ’em’ blend of punk, dubstep and indie that makes whole dancefloors stop, take notice, and then go nuts. The Carpels were first picked up by Charlatans drummer Jon Brookes who signed them to his label One Beat Records earlier this year.
They have been enthused about on BBC 6Music by Mark Radcliffe. Radio One’s Rob da Bank described them as ‘incredible’ after playing their debut single Sand. Next up is the equally fresh and inventive Handshakes and a third release later this year, all produced by Jim Spencer who has worked with New Order, The Cribs, Doves and Shaun Ryder.
Jon Brookes describes what it is about The Carpels that makes you sit up and notice: “They’ve got a kind of indie, quirky sound mixed with a dubstep influence coming from the synth and then these amazing baritone melodies, so just based on those three influences alone it’s worth checking them out, right?”
Jon remembers hearing them for the first time: “We were running a club called The Syndicate in Birmingham when we heard about The Carpels through a friend of ours. He said “Check this band out, they’re really cool, great edge, great sound, really on the cusp of something.”
Their aim is to be at the forefront of modern cutting edge pop music with songs that have indie, punk, dub step & electronic music running through them, picking up an inspired lead on pop from Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, Late of the Pier and The Fall.
Handshakes launches officially in August and there is also a Sandwave electronic/dance remix available, produced by up and coming talent Tom Sandison.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and appearance.
I must say you’ve done a very good job wit this.
In addition, the blog loas super fast for me on Safari.
Outstanding Blog!
