{"id":1784,"date":"2011-04-24T09:50:20","date_gmt":"2011-04-24T08:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.darrenstraight.com\/blog\/?p=1784"},"modified":"2011-04-24T09:50:20","modified_gmt":"2011-04-24T08:50:20","slug":"britains-superfast-broadband-lines-set-to-pass-250000-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.darrenstraight.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/24\/britains-superfast-broadband-lines-set-to-pass-250000-this-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Britains superfast broadband lines set to pass 250,000 this month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Virgin Media and BT lead the way to NGA services<\/p>\n<p>High-speed broadband is starting to catch on in Britain, with the total number of superfast lines delivering speeds in excess of 25Mbps set to pass the 250,000 mark this April &#8211; according to the broadband analysts Point Topic.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Point Topic\u2019s Chief Analyst Tim Johnson says the number is quite modest \u2013 only 1% of homes in Britain \u2013 it means that superfast broadband could be in a position to follow in the footsteps of first-generation broadband 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went on from there to reach over 13 million broadband lines within five years,\u201d he said. \u201cNow we have over 19 million.\u00a0It\u2019s dangerous just to assume that history will repeat itself, but it\u2019s still a good pointer to what will happen to superfast broadband in this decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Point Topic\u2019s estimates for the current number are based on its detailed figures for the end of 2010.\u00a0 These show there were 175,000 superfast broadband lines in use by then.\u00a0The majority were for the 118,000 Virgin Media customers signed up to the 50 megabits per second (50Mbps) cable broadband service.\u00a0The remaining 57,000 or so were getting superfast broadband over telecom infrastructure owned by BT and alternative network operators (altnets).<\/p>\n<p>Projecting these figures forward and allowing for some increase in growth suggests there were about 236,000 superfast lines by the end of March.\u00a0\u201cAt that rate we should pass the quarter-million milestone sometime between now and the end of April,\u201d said Johnson.<\/p>\n<div>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"2\" width=\"168\" valign=\"top\"><strong>Operator<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" width=\"283\" valign=\"top\"><strong>Superfast broadband lines <\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"top\"><strong>December 2010<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"top\"><strong>March 2011 (estimated)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"168\" valign=\"top\">Virgin Media<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"top\">118,000<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"bottom\">146,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"168\" valign=\"top\">BT networks<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"top\">54,000<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"bottom\">86,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"168\" valign=\"top\">Alternative networks<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"top\">3,000<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"bottom\">4,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"168\" valign=\"top\">Total<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"top\">175,000<\/td>\n<td width=\"142\" valign=\"bottom\">236,000<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In terms of technology, Virgin Media\u2019s customers are all being served using the Docsis 3 broadband standard over co-axial cable.\u00a0As of the year end in 2010, another 3,700 superfast end-users had fibre all the way to their homes (FTTP) giving them up to 100Mbps download speeds or even more.\u00a0The remaining 53,000 or so had fibre to their local BT street cabinet (FTTC) with very-high-speed DSL (VDSL) over the last few hundred metres of the telephone line to their homes.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2010 the great majority of the BT lines were sold by BT Retail as their BT Infinity superfast broadband service.
