1971<\/strong> – Bolt Beranek and Ray Tomlinson invent email by adapting an internal messaging
\nprogram and extending it to use the ARPANET to send messages between sites.
\nWithin a year, three quarters of ARPANET traffic is email.<\/p>\n

1976<\/strong> – The Queen sends an email from the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment in
\nMalvern.<\/p>\n

1982<\/strong> – Scott Fahlman kick-starts smiley-culture by suggesting using the \ud83d\ude42 and \ud83d\ude41
\nsmileys to convey emotions in emails.<\/p>\n

1986<\/strong> – Internet newsgroups are born. Rick Adams, Center for Seismic Studies,
\nreleases software enabling news transmission, posting and reading using
\ninternet-standard TCP\/IP connections.<\/p>\n

1989<\/strong> – Tim Berners-Lee and the team at CERN invent the World Wide Web to make
\ninformation easier to publish and access on the internet.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong>– Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web is renamed Yahoo!<\/a> and receives 100,000 visitors. In 1995,
\nit begins displaying adverts.<\/p>\n

1995<\/strong> – eBay<\/a> is launched to enable internet users
\nto trade with each other.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong> \u2013 Broadband is introduced to the UK with the aim of replacing the slower dial
\nup technology.\u00a0 The phenomenon\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 really took off and by 2011 71%
\nof UK homes had broadband internet.\u00a0 The
\nSky Broadband sign-up rate alone stands at
\n77 new customers an hour, every hour since 2006.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong>– Google<\/a> arrives. It pioneers a ranking
\nsystem that uses links to assess a website’s popularity.<\/p>\n

2000<\/strong> – The dotcom bust. After several years of venture capitalists throwing money at
\nproposals with ‘internet’ on the cover, many businesses fail to find a market .<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> – Nearly half of us are connected: UK telecomms regulator Oftel reports that
\n47% of UK homes have internet access and 58% have a PC.<\/p>\n

2004<\/strong> – As broadband becomes more popular, media companies start selling music and
\nvideo online. Napster relaunches as a paid music download store, competing with
\nApple iTunes.<\/p>\n

2004<\/strong> – Mark Zuckerberg launches Facebook<\/a> at Harvard University, and photo sharing
\nwebsite Flickr is born, coinciding with the rise in digital photography.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong> – The internet starts to threaten television and telephone companies. Youtube
\nlaunches to enable people to easily publish videos online.<\/p>\n

2006<\/strong> – Twitter is created. In stark contrast to the proliferation of lengthy blog
\nposts online, Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters.<\/p>\n

2009<\/strong> – Actor Ashton Kutcher becomes the first person on Twitter to have a million
\nfollowers subscribing to his ‘tweets’.<\/p>\n

2010<\/strong> – In February, Facebook announced it has 400 million active members. That’s
\nlarger than the population of the US and UK combined.<\/p>\n
