Rick Adams, Center for Seismic Studies,<br \/>\nreleases software enabling news transmission, posting and reading using<br \/>\ninternet-standard TCP\/IP connections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989<\/strong> &#8211; Tim Berners-Lee and the team at CERN invent the World Wide Web to make<br \/>\ninformation easier to publish and access on the internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994<\/strong>&#8211; Jerry and David&#8217;s Guide to the World Wide Web is renamed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yahoo.com\">Yahoo!<\/a> and receives 100,000 visitors. In 1995,<br \/>\nit begins displaying adverts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\">eBay<\/a> is launched to enable internet users<br \/>\nto trade with each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996<\/strong> \u2013 Broadband is introduced to the UK with the aim of replacing the slower dial<br \/>\nup technology.\u00a0 The phenomenon\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 really took off and by 2011 71%<br \/>\nof UK homes had broadband internet.\u00a0 The<br \/>\nSky Broadband sign-up rate alone stands at<br \/>\n77 new customers an hour, every hour since 2006.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998<\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Google.com\">Google<\/a> arrives. It pioneers a ranking<br \/>\nsystem that uses links to assess a website&#8217;s popularity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000<\/strong> &#8211; The dotcom bust. After several years of venture capitalists throwing money at<br \/>\nproposals with &#8216;internet&#8217; on the cover, many businesses fail to find a market .<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003<\/strong> &#8211; Nearly half of us are connected: UK telecomms regulator Oftel reports that<br \/>\n47% of UK homes have internet access and 58% have a PC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong> &#8211; As broadband becomes more popular, media companies start selling music and<br \/>\nvideo online. Napster relaunches as a paid music download store, competing with<br \/>\nApple iTunes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/technology\/2007\/jul\/25\/media.newmedia\">Mark Zuckerberg launches Facebook<\/a> at Harvard University, and photo sharing<br \/>\nwebsite Flickr is born, coinciding with the rise in digital photography.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005<\/strong> &#8211; The internet starts to threaten television and telephone companies. Youtube<br \/>\nlaunches to enable people to easily publish videos online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong> &#8211; Twitter is created. In stark contrast to the proliferation of lengthy blog<br \/>\nposts online, Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009<\/strong> &#8211; Actor Ashton Kutcher becomes the first person on Twitter to have a million<br \/>\nfollowers subscribing to his &#8216;tweets&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010<\/strong> &#8211; In February, Facebook announced it has 400 million active members.
