Britain’s bendiest road exerts as much G-force on drivers as a rollercoaster or a racetrack according to scientific research.<\/p>\n
A one-mile stretch of the B3081 between Cann Common in Dorset and Tollard Royal in Wiltshire has been named the twistiest by Continental Tyres. Rather than test all 6,300 of Britain’s classified roads, a shortlist was drawn up by polling readers of Auto Express magazine.<\/p>\n
The top ten were then assessed by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) using a car fitted with sophisticated sensors to measure speed and lateral acceleration. Driving the roads at a constant 30mph gave a measurement in kiloNewton seconds (kNs) revealing that in tighter corners drivers were subjected to a force approaching one G, similar to those on a rollercoaster or racetrack.<\/p>\n
Unsurprisingly, almost all the roads are in hilly areas of the country; the top three are found in Wiltshire, Cumbria and the Cheshire Peak District but the sixth placed A157 runs through Lincolnshire, a mostly flat county.<\/p>\n
Tracey Hyem of Continental Tyres said: “At 30mph in an average family hatchback, some British roads are so bendy they exert the kind of forces you would expect on a racetrack.”<\/p>\n
