{"id":69,"date":"2005-08-11T13:00:47","date_gmt":"2005-08-11T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.darrenstraight.com\/blog\/?p=69"},"modified":"2006-02-28T18:02:44","modified_gmt":"2006-02-28T18:02:44","slug":"new-mars-probe-ready-for-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.darrenstraight.com\/blog\/2005\/08\/11\/new-mars-probe-ready-for-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter ready for launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA is to launch a new Mars probe after the rocket designed to send it into orbit was found not to be faulty; the $500m (\u00a3280m) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) will lift off from Florida today, after a delay of one day over safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>It will arrive in orbit around Mars in March 2007 to look at the history of water on the planet and hunt for landing sites for future manned missions.<\/p>\n<p>This is the biggest space craft NASA has ever sent out to space before and is the size of a small bus, it can transmit 10 times more data each minute than any other of the Mars probes.<\/p>\n<p>The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station no earlier than 0850 local time (1252 GMT).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> 30 minutes left for launch, watch it live on NASA TV.<br \/>\n<strong>Update 2 :<\/strong>The time is 12:50 GMT and the mission has now been scrubbed for at least 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.darrenstraight.com\/blog\/images\/2005\/08\/mro2005a.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<font size=\"1\">Image above: The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter ready to launch on Thrusday aboard a Atlas V rocket.
