Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter launched

The $720m (£397m) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has just launched into space at the time of 0740 local time (1145 GMT 1243 BST).

This was the probes third attempt of being launched into space after two days of delays with weather troubles and sensor malfunctions.

The probe is on its way to Mars on a four-year mission to map and find water on it; its cameras will be sending back the clearest images we have ever seen of the red planet.

The probe is due to arrive at Mars in March 2007.

I think I was luckily enough to watch today’s launch live and blog about it at the same time as all of this was just before I had to go out to work.

As soon as I hear any major updates on the mission I’ll let you know if not then I’ll be sure to blog about it’s arrival in March 2007.
