My thoughts of my first day back at college for pre-term 2006

Well as I posted about yesterday, today was my first day back at the University of Kent at Medway where I am continuing to study for a Bcs Honours Degree in Information Technology.

And well I have to say it was quite an interesting day in many ways, heres a quick run through of some of the happening of today and my thoughts on this course so far.

 • There’s much more information available to us than last year.
 • The tutors seminars seemed much more lively and active than some of the tutors from last year, this made them much more enjoyable.
 • I found it quite hard getting back into programming in Java, and I still think I would prefer to code in some other language other than Java.
 • We only had a 20 minute lunch break as we were running late behind schedule.
 • At the end of the day we were asked to give feedback anonymously on what we liked and didn’t like in the lesson, I believe this will probably happen for another week or so.
 • I’m going to have to keep up to date on my studies a hell of a lot more than last year, though I guess I should also have some and remember that “All Work No Play, Makes Jack a Dull Boy”

I wonder what tomorrow my second day will be like!

Why do you have to do java?

It’s part of syllabus to learn about OOP i believe. Even i am in second year. I still need to do similar module to graduate. But again, once you understand the basic. you will be fine… and hehee No play, just work. that’s exactly what i do in first year… people literally said.. i looked like a killer after a night without sleeping because rushing to work on programming coursework (PASCAL…). and hehee can’t wait what will you say about second day of your final year uni life :)!! hope it goes more interesting :)!!

Yep Eric’s Right Andrew, there’s no way I could have got out of doing Java or another OOP language without taking another computer course, like networking etc but that would mean my career would be based mostly upon networking. With the course I’m doing now though quite hard I will have learnt a wide range of different things including starting up a small business hence the small business and law modules.

And haha yeah I wonder if I’ll have anything to write about tomorrow! 🙂

Exactly; if you don’t like java, why didn’t you do another OOP? 😕

*OOP Language

Haha andrew read the rest! 😉

So basically I have to do Java because that’s what’s on offer on the course I’m doing. You might like to know that it’s not always possible to get exactly what you want in life without maybe going somewhere else like to a different university, but that would mean more fees, more traveling, more debt etc.

But hey if you forget about the Java, I think the course I’m on now is a great course which is very diverse with great tutors, and though the university of Kent is in partnership with Sun Microsystems hence studying Java, they also have many other close contacts with Microsoft/IBM/Google etc who award students.

And not only that but the University of Kent hosts the only official Source Forge (sourceforge.net) mirror in the UK, which is kind of cool as I always get the files downloaded super fast, and even more faster if I’m on campus because the network is directly linked up to their University of Kent Source Forge Mirror, though I’m sure there super fast fiber optical link to the net helps too.

And wow is this some comment or what. :p

“Java or another OOP language”

Maybe you should have left out “or another OOP Language”.

Darren Straight September 6, 2006 at 10:29 pm

Now why would I do that! :p

andrew247 September 7, 2006 at 6:28 pm

Because you said “or another OOP Language”, leading me to believe that you meant you could do java or another OOP Language. 😉

Darren Straight September 7, 2006 at 8:13 pm

Well I can but I would have to do near enough the same course somewhere else, and as explained it’s not feasible for me to do that! 😉
