Microsoft have announced that is has acquired a minority stake of 4% in job-listings partner CareerBuilder.com and will use that job-search engine on MSN sites overseas in a bid to capture more of the classified advertising money migrating to the Web.

Microsoft has also agreed to extend a pre-existing partnership with CareerBuilder until 2013. The deal, in which Microsoft’s MSN network directs traffic to the recruitment site, could be worth $443m. It should also help CareerBuilder to speed the development of its international business.

Microsoft Corp. today announced that Windows Live Hotmail, the successor to MSN Hotmail, is launching globally in 36 languages. The most significant upgrade for Hotmail since it pioneered the webmail industry in 1996, the new service has been built to be a vast improvement over the previous Hotmail offering, having incorporated input from more than 20 million beta testers. Windows Live Hotmail will deliver a safer, more powerful and productive e-mail experience than previous versions with flexible access via the Web, on a mobile phone or with an e-mail client. Microsoft also announced that later this month Windows Live Hotmail customers will be able to access their Windows Live Hotmail e-mail and contacts for free using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Office Outlook 2007 via the new Microsoft Office Outlook Connector beta.

Windows Live Hotmail Launches in US on Monday

I’ve mentioned before of a possible launch date of Windows Live Hotmail in the US sometime in the second week of May and well it looks like I could be right, as according to sources familiar with the company’s plans Windows Live Hotmail will be launching this Monday the 7th of May 2007.

And though as of yet Microsoft have declined to comment through its public relations agency so it’s quite possible that this date could be wrong. I’m pretty positive of the Windows Live Hotmail launch date being Monday or at least next week.

Don’t hate me if I’m wrong though! ;)

Flickr to Replace Yahoo Photos

Just got word from my friend Eric Cheung that Yahoo is to shut down Yahoo Photos, with Flickr replacing Yahoo Photos.

Yahoo said that users of Yahoo Photos would be given an option of either shifting to Flickr or other photo sharing websites. Announcing the decision Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield said that users could move their pictures to other sites such as PhotoBucket, Kodak Gallery, Shutterfly Inc or Snapfish.

“Our increased focus on Flickr aligns with Yahoo’s mission to connect people to their passions, their communities and the world’s knowledge, while focusing on delivering value to consumers and advertisers,” said Yahoo Network Division Executive Vice President Jeff Weiner

Microsoft and Yahoo once again in Discussions for Merger!

Both the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that sources say Microsoft and Yahoo were are talking again about how they might merge or cooperate.

To quote from the The New York Post it says:

Recent talks between Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. over how to band together betray increasing unrest at Microsoft over how to compete with Google Inc. and get in step with the booming online-advertising market.

Microsoft and Yahoo discussed a possible merger or other matchup that would pair their respective strengths, say people familiar with the situation. The merger discussions are no longer active, these people say, but that doesn’t preclude the two companies from some other form of cooperation.

If merger talks are revived, whether Microsoft and Yahoo could reach an agreement remains as much of a question as it did a year ago, when similar talks ended inconclusively. Microsoft has always steered clear of large acquisitions. Yahoo has about 11,700 employees and earlier this week had a market value of about $38 billion. Yahoo shares surged $2.80, or 9.9%, to $30.98 in 4 p.m. Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading on news of the talks, raising the company’s market value to around $42 billion Friday. Microsoft’s shares fell 41 cents to $30.56 on Nasdaq.

Windows Live Hotmail Launches ‘Email Britain’ Campaign

To celebrate the UK launch of the new Windows Live Hotmail, the UK’s no 1 email service has announced a unique collaboration with the British Library, to create the first ever archive of British emails today.

The ‘Email Britain’ campaign, which will run throughout May, asks the British public to make email history by forwarding a memorable or significant email from their sent mail or inbox, for inclusion in a digital archive that will be stored at the British Library for future generations.

Email has become the most important communication tool for the 21st century with millions of emails containing rich and diverse content sent in the UK every day* – none of which have been captured and archived on this scale before. The Email Britain collection of real-life emails will provide an important snapshot of British life over email – the good, the bad, the ugly and the amusing – to produce a unique social history catalogue of life and culture in Britain today which can be read and enjoyed by Library visitors for centuries to come.

Jo Wickremasinghe, Windows Live Hotmail spokesperson, said: “As we enter a new phase for email with the launch of the new Windows Live Hotmail, we wanted to preserve a slice of email history by recording the best of email to date. We want to capture the biggest possible cross-section of emailing life in the Email Britain archive, and we urge people to dig out their best emails and pass them on for everyone to enjoy!”

John Tuck, Head of British Collections at the British Library, said: “Email has in many respects replaced traditional forms of communications such as letters or memoranda, thousands of examples of which we have at the British Library. In the digital age email has become prevalent in our day-to-day lives. Email Britain will allow us to archive a vast snapshot of our present-day email communications and will be of great value for future researchers. Digital archiving of email has never been attempted before on this scale and we’re very excited to be capturing such a rich slice of contemporary life.”

To contribute to the Email Britain archive, emailers should log on to www.newhotmail.co.uk/emailbritain for more information, or email directly to email@emailbritain.co.uk. Emails should be submitted under one of the following categories which should be typed into the subject box of the email: Blunders, Life Changing Emails, Complaints, Spam, Love and Romance, Humour, Everyday Emails, News, World Around You, Tales from Abroad.
